The Kalinago — the people the colonial record called "Carib" and used as a category of erasure — were among the most sovereign peoples of the Caribbean at the moment of European contact. Masters of the ocean, defenders of the island chain the Spanish could never fully subdue, keepers of a matrilineal world the colonizers spent centuries trying to dismantle. The Kalinago Mother is the figure at the center of that sovereignty: the one who carried the lineage, who taught the children the shape of the world, who held the community together when everything outside was trying to break it.

For Katherin Joyette, this is not a portrait of a people adjacent to her story. Yurumein — the island the colonizers renamed St. Vincent — is the ancestral homeland documented in her own lineage research, the place where the Joyette name traces through French-Kalinago intermarriage. The Kalinago Mother in this portrait is not a historical figure. She is family.

This is not a portrait of a vanished people either. The Kalinago Barana Auké — the Carib Territory of Dominica — still stands. Garifuna communities, descendants of Kalinago and African peoples who chose to resist together rather than surrender, keep the culture alive across Central America and the Caribbean diaspora. The line did not break. It bent, survived, and carried itself forward.
